With China providing the lead to end up top of the medals table with great aplomb and South Korea and Japan following in its wake at seventh and eighth in terms of gold haul, the Beijing Games saw the Asian nations smile and celebrate success like never before. India, out of contention in a medal in hockey, ended its drought with first individual gold in shooting and another two bronze in boxing and wrestling.
